Product analytics tools compared: PostHog, Mixpanel, Amplitude

Product analytics tools measure what people do inside a software product: the actions they take, who takes them, and what those people and actions have in common. PostHog, Mixpanel and Amplitude are the best-known examples, and each reads mobile apps as well as websites. Convertlyft is not one of them. It is website analytics for one website: why visitors leave, what broke, and what to change. This page compares the three honestly and says where each one fits.

Product analytics or website analytics?

The two answer different questions. Product analytics follows a person through a product they use again and again, often signed in: which features they use, whether they come back next week, which group of people stays. Website analytics follows visits to a site: where visitors came from, which pages they read, where they left before buying or getting in touch, and why.

When PostHog, Mixpanel or Amplitude is the better choice

  • You measure a mobile app. All three list mobile installs. Convertlyft reads websites only.
  • Your product is used again and again by signed-in people. Product analytics is built to follow one person over weeks and to compare groups of people. That is not what Convertlyft is for.
  • You ship with feature flags and experiments. PostHog and Mixpanel name both on their own pages; Amplitude names feature experimentation and feature management. Convertlyft does not switch features on or off.
  • You want surveys, in-app guides or a data warehouse in the same product. PostHog names surveys and a warehouse; Amplitude names guides and surveys. Convertlyft has no surveys.

If one of these is your main question, pick between those three. Our PostHog alternative and Mixpanel alternative pages compare each one with Convertlyft in more detail.

Where Convertlyft fits

Convertlyft is for one website: a shop, a lead-generation site, or the marketing site in front of a product. It answers why visitors don't buy, sign up or get in touch, and what to change first.

  • One line, then reports. Paste one line of code, or install the WordPress plugin. Page views, forms started and left (with the last field typed in, its name and type, never its value), clicks that did nothing, repeated clicks and errors are read with no extra code. Counting sales on a site that is not on Shopify needs a convertlyft.track() call.
  • Every visit recorded. Every visit is recorded on every plan, short ones too, up to a safety limit of 50,000 new recordings per site per day. Replays are kept 90 days and what visitors did 24 months.
  • Funnels set up for you. Your main funnel is set up from your site's type. Add your own of up to 6 steps, split by phones and computers, and compare with the period before. See funnel analysis.
  • Why, not only how many. Heatmaps, visit recordings, JavaScript errors grouped into issues, and Core Web Vitals from real visits.
  • What to change. What to do lists to-dos, each with the numbers behind it and one change to make where there is one. A report arrives every Monday at 07:30, your time.
  • SEO beside the visits. Rankings, a site audit by our own crawler, and your Search Console searches next to the visits they bring.

Visitors stay anonymous unless your site tells Convertlyft who they are, for example when someone signs in. More on how Convertlyft works.

Using both

Many teams have a product that people sign in to and a website in front of it. A product analytics tool can read the product while Convertlyft reads the website. Convertlyft's line runs beside other analytics code, so you do not have to remove anything to try it.

Questions to ask any analytics tool before you choose

  • Does it read the thing you ship: a website, a mobile app, or both?
  • What do you have to plan and send before the first report means anything?
  • Does it count every visit, or a sample?
  • How is the free allowance counted: events, recordings, or visits?
  • Does each number link to the visits or people behind it?
  • Does it tell you what to change, or leave that to you?

Questions

What is a product analytics tool?

Software that records the actions people take inside a product, such as an app or a signed-in web service, who takes them, and what those people and actions have in common, so a team can see which features are used and who comes back.

Is Convertlyft a product analytics tool?

No. Convertlyft is website analytics for one website: where visitors leave, why, and what to change. For a mobile app, or for following signed-in people through a product over weeks, a product analytics tool such as PostHog, Mixpanel or Amplitude fits better.

Does Convertlyft work for a mobile app?

No. Convertlyft measures websites through one script tag or its WordPress plugin. There is no mobile app SDK.

Can I use a product analytics tool and Convertlyft together?

Yes. Convertlyft's line runs beside other analytics code, so a product analytics tool can keep reading your product while Convertlyft reads your website.

What does Convertlyft cost?

Free up to 5,000 visits a month, with every feature. The plans above that are on the pricing page.
