When to hire a CRO consultant

Hire a CRO consultant when the problem needs judgment: your offer, why people hesitate, a redesign, or a company that will not decide. Use software when the problem needs attention: knowing every day where people stop and when something breaks. Neither one makes the change on your site for you; you, your developer or your AI tool still does. If you are weighing a consultant against Convertlyft itself, we compare the two on Convertlyft as a CRO consultant alternative. This post is about the earlier question: which kind of help your problem needs.

What a CRO consultant does

A good one does some or all of this:

  1. Reviews your site and your numbers. Reads your funnel, finds where people stop, and forms ideas about why.
  2. Talks to and watches your customers. Interviews, usability tests, recorded visits, sales calls. This is the part that takes skill and time.
  3. Ranks what to change. A written plan of what to change and in what order.
  4. Sometimes runs tests. On a retainer, an agency runs A/B tests for you.

The usual result of the review is a written report. A good report is worth having, but someone on your side still has to make each change, and then check whether it worked.

When to hire a consultant

Your offer may be wrong. Pricing, packaging, positioning, which customers to serve. Software reads what people do on the pages you have. It cannot tell you that the offer is wrong.

You do not know why people hesitate. Doubt and confusion often never turn into a click. Watching real people try to use the site finds them. Nielsen Norman Group’s first rule of usability is to watch what people actually do and not to believe what people say they do,[1] and its model, built on many projects, expects a test with five people to uncover about 85% of the usability problems.[2] That kind of research is skilled work, and it is what a good consultant brings.

A decision will not get made. Sometimes the problem is known inside the company and ignored. An outside expert can win an argument an employee cannot.

Something is new. A redesign, a new market, a site whose code no one on your side can open. There is no past pattern to compare against.

If your real problem is on this list, hire the consultant.

When software is enough

You need to know when something breaks. A review is a snapshot. A release that breaks checkout on a Tuesday should be noticed on Tuesday, not at the next review.

You need it every day, not once. Where your visitors come from, and what device they use, changes with every campaign. A conclusion from January can be out of date by March.

You already know roughly what to look at. For the common problems, a step that loses most people, an error on checkout, a button people click that does nothing, the work is to watch for them and act on them, not to discover them.

Your budget is small. A consultant works from a quote after a scoping call.[3] Convertlyft can be started free.[3]

What the software side looks like with Convertlyft

To be exact about what Convertlyft does, and what it does not:

  1. One line of code on your site counts every visit, with no sampling. Visits from devices you mark as yours are left out.[4]
  2. Each day is compared with its own trailing week: what leaked, what lifted, new errors and slow pages. A quiet day says so instead of inventing a problem.[3]
  3. What to do names one change, with the measurement behind it. Funnel steps, errors and rage or dead clicks link to the recorded visits behind them.[3]
  4. You, your developer or your AI tool makes the change. With an AI app connected, Do it with your AI copies the change as a prompt for it.[3] Convertlyft never merges anything.[4]
  5. When you press I fixed it, the next check marks it Confirmed fixed or Came back.[4]

Consultant, software, or both?

Your situationBest fitWhy
Your offer, price or positioning may be wrongConsultantThat is judgment, not measurement
Nobody knows why people hesitateConsultantIt takes interviews and usability tests
Leadership will not act without an outside viewConsultantYou are paying to be believed, and that is fair
A redesign or a new marketConsultantThere is no past pattern to compare against
You need to know the day something breaksSoftwareIt reads your numbers every day
You know where people stop, and nothing changesSoftwareA short list, each item with its evidence
A small budgetSoftwareIt can be started free
Strategy now, then watching every dayBothThe consultant sets the direction; the software watches after they leave

Many teams use both. If you already work with a consultant, you can invite them as a Member, so they start from your measured funnel, errors and recorded visits instead of a fresh review.[3]

Questions

When should you hire a CRO consultant?

When the problem needs judgment: your offer or positioning may be wrong, nobody knows why people hesitate, a redesign or new market is coming, or the company will not act without an outside view.

Can software replace a CRO consultant?

Not entirely. Software can watch your numbers every day and point at what changed. It does not do strategy, research with your customers, or the work of getting a company to act.

How much does a CRO consultant cost?

We found no published study of consultant prices with a stated sample, so we give no figure. Request a quote after a scoping call, and find out what you will have at the end: a report, or changes made and measured.

Does Convertlyft make the changes for me?

No. It names one change with the evidence behind it; you, your developer or your AI tool makes it. Then it checks whether the change held.
